Our Story
Dr Noboru Iwamura, a late Japanese volunteer, holds the distinction of being the first to come to Nepal under the UMN Program. For an impressive span of 22 years, he selflessly dedicated himself to serving various regions of Nepal, including Bhaktapur. Dr. Iwamura brought hope to those afflicted by tuberculosis, as he tirelessly spread the message that this disease can be cured. Equipped with his portable X-ray machine, which he carried with him wherever he went, he successfully treated numerous patients. His unwavering commitment to the impoverished and marginalized populations residing in remote villages, who were grappling with tuberculosis, became the cornerstone for the development of chest medicine facilities in Nepal.
Dr Iwamura played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Tuberculosis Hospital, Palpa Mission Hospital, the National Tuberculosis Centre, and the SAARC Tuberculosis Centre. He made significant contributions to these institutions, leaving an indelible mark on the healthcare landscape in Nepal.
Born on May 26, 1927, in Japan, Dr. Iwamura was a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing in 1945. Tragically, he passed away on November 27, 2005, at the age of 78, due to blood cancer.
To honour the memory of this remarkable individual, the Dr Iwamura Memorial Hospital was established in Bhaktapur in 1998 and commenced operations in 2001. As of January 2005, the local community actively participated in the hospital as the primary stakeholder and assumed management responsibilities. Since then, the hospital has made consistent progress and expanded its facilities, providing reliable and affordable medical services to the community.
